Classe Verte in Mauritius: A School's Guide to Nature-Study Trips

A classe verte — the French tradition of taking a class out of the classroom for a nature-study trip — travels well to Mauritius, where reef, forest and coast are all a short drive away. This guide is for teachers and heads planning a classe verte (or a classe de découverte) on the island: the formats, the right season, and how to run it safely.

What a classe verte looks like in Mauritius

At its heart, a classe verte swaps the timetable for the field: pupils learn by observing, measuring and doing, outdoors. In Mauritius that can be a single immersive day or a multi-night residential, built around the island’s environments:

Choose day or residential

A day classe verte is the simplest to run and the easiest to get consent for — no overnight logistics, and it works year-round with a weather fallback. A residential classe verte deepens the experience but adds real planning: accommodation, evening supervision and a firm weather plan. Pick the right season

Timing is everything in Mauritius. Aim for the February-to-July window for the best conditions and the clearest calendar. The cyclone season runs 1 November to 15 May: any overnight element inside that window — like an Easter residential — is booked with a weather clause and a contracted indoor fallback venue. Keep senior grades clear of the exam blackout from about mid-September to late November.

Ratios, safety and supervision

A classe verte is only as good as its safety plan. When we facilitate:

  • Delivery runs at one TeamBuilding.mu crew plus two school staff per 25 pupils, with at least one first-aider on site.
  • All crew are Certificate-of-Character (CoC) vetted.
  • We complete the risk assessments and consent paperwork — TBM requires a signed parental-consent pack for every participant under 18 as a condition of booking.
  • Sessions are facilitated in French, English or Kreol Morisien, so every pupil is included.

Turn field time into learning

The value of a classe verte is in what pupils take back. Add an optional pre- and post-programme survey and we’ll return a short impact mini-report on the learning outcomes achieved — useful evidence for the class file and for parents. Brief pupils to keep a field notebook: one observation, one question and one thing they’d like to change.

Budget: what actually shapes the cost

A classe verte is built around your class and your brief rather than sold at a fixed per-pupil rate, so the useful thing to know before you enquire is which decisions move the number:

  • Group size - crew, field equipment and set-up time spread across the whole class, so a full year group works harder for you than a half-class.
  • Venue - a public beach or coastal site, a domaine estate with hire fees, or a residential centre with beds and full board.
  • Duration and nights - a single field day, one overnight, or a multi-night residential with evening supervision.
  • Catering - packed lunches brought from home against meals prepared and served on site.
  • Transport - coach numbers confirmed against your final headcount, staff included, and any travel between study sites.
  • Weather cover - whether the site has usable shelter or needs cover brought in, which matters most in cyclone season.
