CAS Activity Ideas in Mauritius (IB Creativity, Activity & Service)

CAS — Creativity, Activity, Service — asks IB Diploma students to step outside the classroom and grow. In Mauritius the island itself is the resource: reef, forest, sport and community are all within reach. This guide sets out CAS activity ideas across all three strands, plus how to run them so the reflection is as strong as the experience.

Making CAS count: the three strands

Good CAS is balanced across the strands and, ideally, includes at least one longer collaborative project. Keep three principles in mind as you plan:

  • Real challenge — students should attempt something genuinely new to them.
  • Reflection — the learning lives in the debrief, not just the doing.
  • Safety and supervision — every off-site session needs proper cover (more on that below).

Creativity ideas

Creativity is about original thinking and the arts, but it also covers designing and leading something yourself.

  • Music and rhythm workshops — inclusive, fast-forming ensembles where a whole group performs together within minutes. Browse formats in our experiences collection.
  • Event design — students plan and MC a house event, a welcome day or a showcase, owning the run-sheet and the logistics.
  • Creative problem-solving challenges — design-and-build station circuits that reward imagination under time pressure.

Activity strand ideas

The Activity strand is about physical exertion and a healthy lifestyle — a natural fit for Mauritius.

  • Adventure and expedition days — navigation, teamwork and outdoor challenge, scalable from a single day to a one-night expedition camp.
  • Beach olympics and team sport circuits — relays, target games and tournaments that get a whole cohort moving.
  • Archery Tag / Bowfighters — fast, tactical and inclusive, run under a recognised safety-management system (note: traditional paintball is not available in Mauritius).
  • A student leadership retreat — combine physical challenge with genuine leadership practice on our Student Leadership Retreat.

Service ideas

Service — learning with and for the community — is where CAS leaves something behind.

  • Eco and marine service-learning — reef-friendly clean-ups, mangrove and coastal restoration and conservation projects, structured so students understand the science as well as the effort. See our Eco & Marine Service-Learning Residential.
  • Community giving projects — build, donate or restore something tangible for a local cause, with a clear before-and-after.
  • Peer teaching and mentoring — older students design and run sessions for younger ones, closing the loop between Activity and Service.

Running CAS safely in Mauritius

Off-site CAS needs the same rigour as any school trip. When we facilitate a CAS session:

  • Delivery runs at one TeamBuilding.mu crew plus two school staff per 25 students, with at least one first-aider on site.
  • All crew are Certificate-of-Character (CoC) vetted.
  • We complete the risk assessments and consent paperwork — TBM requires a signed parental-consent pack for every participant under 18 as a condition of booking.
  • Sessions are facilitated in English, French or Kreol Morisien.

The cyclone season runs 1 November to 15 May: any overnight or expedition element inside that window is booked with a weather clause and a contracted indoor fallback venue. Download our free school outing risk assessment template to see the full checklist.

Turning the experience into reflection

CAS is not formally assessed, but reflection is a required part of it — students must evidence the learning outcomes — so design it in from the start. Add an optional pre- and post-programme survey and we’ll return a short impact mini-report on the learning outcomes — a ready-made prompt for student reflections and portfolio evidence. Brief students to capture their own moments: a decision they changed their mind on, a moment they led, a skill they didn’t have last term.
